clinton is fresh off a des moines register endorsement on saturday. then yesterday, she picked up another one from the "boston globe." a glass ceiling has been shattered in the iowa national guard... the guard's first female combat engineer is now training in iowa city. 20 year old megan reaska enlisted in december thanks to the encouragement of her father. the university of iowa student says the moment was filled with many emotions... i had no idea i was going to be the first female combat engineer in iowa. i had no idea, it was just kind of like a, kind of a surprise to me and it's such an honor to be the first female combat engineer in iowa and when he told me i was like wow, it's exciting, it's very exciting but no i had no idea. reaska plans to continue her education while serving. iowa is seeing a surge in gun sales and applications for permits... the des moines register reports local dealers have seen sales rise by up to 30 percent since november.

thousand firearm background checks in december... that's more than any other month last year, which averaged 7 thousand to 17 thousand. some say it's fueled by the president's executive action on gun control, while others say it's simply for protection. police have identified the victim in des moines' first homicide of the year... 71 year old norma mcneeley was found dead inside this home on pioneer road. officers originally responded to the home for a welfare check yesterday morning. police haven't released any additional information but say an update is expected at noon. one person is dead after a crash in johnson county over the weekend... it happened along interstate 80, near mile marker 240, yesterday afternoon. troopers say one car was rear ended by another, pushing it into the next lane and causing it to collide with a semi.

at the scene. another person was taken to the hospital. the crash remains under investigation. gas prices across the country are at their lowest in seven years. over the past two weeks, the prices have dropped a about 14 cents. the national average is now a dollar 91 per gallon of regular gas.. prices haven't been this low since january 2009. in the metro, we're seeing an average price of just under 2 dollars. the lowest you'll find around

they will also discuss if medicaid members and providers are getting clear communication from the state and managed care organizations. a historic snowstorm dumped several feet of snow on the east coast this weekend... this morning, plows are cleaning up piles of snow along the streets of new york city. along the jersey shore, the city is dealing with a handful of flooded neighborhoods. and in washington d-c, crews are busy repairing downed power lines from strong winds. hundreds of iowans are glad to be home after feeling the effects of the storm first hand. we were worried, because you have to get up in the mountains and get over that, and we didn't get over that. 150 iowans attended a "march for life" in the nation's capitol right before the storm hit... they tried to take off early to beat it, but still found themselves stuck in charter buses on the pennsylvania turnpike. the traffic jam lasted nearly 23 hours. but organizers say the situation didn't dampen the group's spirits,

cyclone's big game at home tonight... students have been camping outside of hilton coliseum for about a week. dozens of tents are stretching three fourths of the way around the building. some set up as early as last monday, and they say they'd do it over again... it's freezing cold out here but a lot of the people will just walk on by, you meet new people, even just camping out is worth it and for the cyclone basketball team? definitely.
